The size of the truck shapes the cost, the timing and the safety of your move. The mistake almost everyone makes is going too small to save a few dollars an hour, then losing far more on a second trip.

Here is the asymmetry in three numbers. Under sizing is the expensive error; over sizing barely costs you anything.

That last point catches people out. A second trip does not just double your crew time, it doubles the drive. A rigid removal truck uses far more fuel than the car you are used to, so the kilometres add up.

Common truck sizes in Australia and their uses

Australian removal trucks fall into three working bands. The image below is the quick version; the table under it is the part no other guide gives you, the real interior dimensions in metres alongside capacity, payload and the licence each band needs.

Tonnage is a weight class, not the load carried: a removalist sizes by cubic metres, so a busy 3 to 4 bedroom home often needs the upper end of a band. Treat the m³ figures as ranges, since the same tonne badge spans different volumes between brands.

The bands overlap at the edges, which is normal. A roomy 5 tonne truck and a compact 6 tonne truck can hold almost the same load. The chart shows how the capacity climbs.

Cubic metres are hard to picture, so here is what each band actually swallows. A handy anchor: about 10 standard moving boxes (60 x 40 x 40 cm) fill roughly 1 m³.

What it costs when you get the truck size wrong

Numbers make this clearer than any warning. Take a real pattern we see often: a customer books a 4.5t truck for a move that needed a 10t, banking on the cheaper hourly rate.

The 4.5t fills up, the crew gets through what they can, and a second trip is the only way to shift the rest. Here is how the day ends up costing more, not less.

The 4.5t day was two trips at $190/hr: 4 hours plus 1 hour travel ($950), then 3 hours plus 1 hour travel ($760). The 10t day was one trip, 5 hours plus 1 hour travel at $220/hr ($1,320). Same goods, one tidy run.

If you self drive instead of using a crew, the headline daily rate hides a stack of extras, and you pay them all again if a small truck forces a re hire.

How to estimate the right truck size for your move

You do not need to guess. Start from your home type for a ballpark, then fine tune with the per item volumes if your place is unusually full or unusually sparse.

This matrix shows honest ranges, because the same home can vary a lot once you count the garage, the shed and the gear in the back room.

Tips to maximise truck space

Smart loading can lift a truck one effective size without paying for it. The aim is simple: fill every cubic metre while staying under the weight limit.

Disassemble and stack flat. Break down bed frames and dining tables, use uniform boxes so they stack square, and fill each box to the brim so nothing shifts.

Heaviest at the bottom, weight spread out. Load the heavy pieces first as a stable base, and spread the weight across the floor rather than piling it at one end.

Label on the sides, not the tops. A quick room label keeps unloading fast and stops boxes being opened twice.

Here is the trap loading hides: a truck full by volume can already be over its weight limit. Dense loads like books and whitegoods hit the payload ceiling first.

Frequently asked questions about truck sizes in Australia

The questions we hear most when customers are weighing up a size, answered straight.

Can I drive a removal truck on a normal car licence?

Yes, but only up to 4.5 tonnes GVM on a standard Class C car licence. Above that you need an LR (up to 8t), MR (over 8t) or HR licence. Many DIY hire pantechs are built to 4.49t GVM to stay car licence legal.

What size truck do I need for a 3 bedroom house?

Most 3 bedroom homes are 25 to 40 m³, which fits a Medium 6 to 10 tonne truck in one trip. Some homes with a full garage or shed run to 45 m³ and want a 10 to 12 tonne truck, so size up if in doubt.

How many cubic metres is my move?

As a rough guide: studio 8 to 14 m³, 1 bed 15 to 22 m³, 2 bed 22 to 32 m³, 3 bed 25 to 40 m³, 4 bed 42 to 55 m³, 5 plus bed or office 55 to 70 plus m³. Quick shortcut: floor area in m² divided by 2 is roughly your move volume in m³.

Is it better to hire a bigger truck or do two trips?

One bigger truck almost always wins. A second trip roughly doubles the drive and the load and unload time you pay for. In the example above, two trips in a 4.5t cost $1,710 against $1,320 for one trip in a 10t, about 30% more.

Why compare cubic metres instead of tonnes?

Because the tonne badge is a vehicle weight class, not how much the truck holds. The same 6 tonne pantech is sold anywhere from 36 to 50 m³ depending on the body fitted, so always compare in cubic metres.

How long is a removal truck?

A Small 3 to 5t truck has roughly a 4 m cargo body, a Medium 6 to 10t around 7.5 m, and a Large 9 to 16t up to about 9.5 m. Large trucks often cannot fit or legally park on narrow inner Melbourne streets, so a smaller truck plus a shuttle sometimes wins.

Should I round up if I am between two sizes?
