Hard Rubbish Collection in Melbourne: A Suburb by Suburb Guide for 2026
Hard rubbish is the clean out most Melbourne households rely on: the old mattress, the dead fridge, the couch that will not survive another move. Hard rubbish collection in Melbourne has no single rule, because each of the 31 metro councils runs its own service. Find yours in seconds:
That is why the same question, “when is my hard rubbish collection?”, has 31 different answers across the city. We move families in and out of these suburbs every week, so we built the lookup above to cut through it.
Below is the full council by council detail, plus what to do when a booked collection cannot come fast enough. If you are clearing a whole property, our guide on getting rid of old furniture and the team behind removalists in Melbourne can take the overflow the council will not.
Quick answer
Most of metro Melbourne no longer has a fixed hard rubbish day. Of the 31 metro councils, 27 run a booked, on demand service where you choose your own collection date online, and 4 still collect on scheduled dates by area. Free allowances range from 1 to 5 collections a year and size limits from 1 to 5 cubic metres.
To get yours, find your council in the lookup above, check your free allowance and size limit, then book on the council page or wait for your scheduled week.
How hard rubbish collection works in Melbourne
Hard rubbish, or hard waste, is household items too big for your bins: furniture, mattresses, whitegoods and scrap metal. In Victoria there is no state wide service. Your local council owns the rules, sets your free allowance and decides how you get a collection.
It is not universal either. The Victorian Auditor-General found that in 2019 to 2020 only 43 of Victoria’s 79 councils ran a hard waste service at all, and 31 of those are the metro councils covered here.
The big shift over the past five years is the move from scheduled collections to what councils call an at-call service. Brimbank, Merri-bek and Whitehorse have all dropped the old “your street, this week” model in favour of an at-call collection you book yourself.
This matters for planning. On an at-call service you can line a collection up with your move date. If you are in one of the few areas still on scheduled dates, you may wait months for the window, which is often why people clearing a house call a removalist instead. If you are moving removalists across Victoria and cannot wait for a council date, booked mattress removal and same day pickups fill the gap.
Hard rubbish collection by council in Melbourne
Here is every metro Melbourne council, grouped by region, with how its service works, your free allowance, the size limit and the cost of any extra collection. Council names link straight to the official hard waste page. Not sure how much you have? Our volume calculator gives you a cubic metre estimate in a minute.
The spread is wide. Free allowances run from a single collection a year in the inner city up to five voucher backed collections in the outer north, and paid extra collections range from about $83 to $216. If you live on a border suburb like Footscray or Brunswick, check which council your street sits in, because the rules can change on the other side of the road.
Inner Melbourne: hard rubbish in Melbourne, Port Phillip, Stonnington and Yarra
Inner Melbourne is the tightest for volume. City of Melbourne allows just 1 cubic metre once a year across Kensington, Carlton and Docklands, while Port Phillip gives houses four bookings covering St Kilda and Albert Park.

Which council collects hard rubbish in my suburb?
Most people search for their suburb, not their council, and the two rarely share a name. Kensington, Flemington and Parkville are all City of Melbourne. Brunswick, Coburg and Pascoe Vale are Merri-bek. Footscray, Yarraville and Seddon are Maribyrnong.
Find your suburb in the list below to see which council collects your hard rubbish, then read that council’s row in the tables above for your allowance and size limit.

All 548 metro Melbourne suburbs and their council. Where a suburb sits across two councils, both are listed: check which one your street falls under.
When is my hard rubbish collection in Melbourne? 2026 dates
Only four Melbourne councils still collect hard rubbish on set dates. If your council is not in this table, there is no fixed date at all: you choose one when you book, usually 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
| Council | When it runs | How to find your date |
|---|---|---|
| Frankston City Council | Set week by suburb | Enter your address |
| City of Monash | July to September | Enter your address |
| City of Stonnington | Spring and autumn | Enter your address |
| Yarra Ranges Shire Council | Late January to March | Enter your address |
The other 27 councils have no fixed date: you choose one when you book. Windows verified July 2026.
Timing matters most when you are moving. If your scheduled window falls after you have handed back the keys, short term storage bridges the gap, and it is worth checking what storage costs in Melbourne before you commit to a date.
What counts as hard rubbish, and what does not
Every council draws a similar line. Bulky household items are in. General rubbish, building waste and anything hazardous is out. Get it wrong and the truck leaves your pile on the kerb with a knock back notice, which then becomes your problem to clear.
| Usually accepted | Usually not accepted |
|---|---|
| Furniture: sofas, tables, chairs, bookcases | General household rubbish and bagged waste |
| Mattresses and bed bases (usually a 1 to 2 limit) | Building and renovation debris: bricks, concrete, plaster |
| Whitegoods: fridges, washers, dryers (doors removed) | Tyres, gas bottles and car batteries |
| Scrap metal and rolled, tied carpet | Paint, oil, chemicals and asbestos |
| E-waste and TVs (accepted by many councils, check yours) | Green waste, unless your council runs a separate branch service |
Item limits and accepted lists vary by council. Confirm on your council page before you put anything out.
Before you throw something on the pile, ask whether it still has life in it. Anything clean and working is better donated or sold than crushed in a truck. It is worth a quick look at where to donate furniture in Melbourne or the best spots to buy and sell second hand furniture before it becomes hard rubbish at all.
How to book your hard rubbish collection
The process depends on your model. At-call councils want you to request each collection and place items out the night before your allocated day. Scheduled councils publish a set week for your area, so there is nothing to book, you just present your items on time.
| Step | Booked, at-call council | Scheduled council |
|---|---|---|
| Find your date | Book online or by phone, often 2 to 4 weeks ahead | Look up your area week (a MyAddress style tool) |
| Sort your items | Separate metal, mattresses, whitegoods and e-waste | Same, many councils use 4 to 5 kerbside stacks |
| Put it out | The evening before your booked day, within the size limit | By 6am on the Monday of your week, not earlier |
A booked collection slots neatly into your moving house checklist, so the old furniture is gone before the truck arrives. In growth areas like Point Cook, where Wyndham gives three free collections a year, that flexibility is a genuine advantage over the old fixed schedule.
Before you put your hard rubbish out
A few rules keep you out of trouble and off the fine list. Councils are strict about early or oversized piles, and several now treat them as illegal dumping. Frankston, for example, warns that anything placed out early or over its 2 cubic metre limit can attract fines from $200.
- Stay within the limit. Anything over your size cap is left behind. A double pile often uses up your whole yearly allowance.
- Put it out on time, not early. A pile sitting on the nature strip for a week is what draws complaints and fines.
- Keep it accessible and safe. Within 2 metres of the boundary, not blocking the footpath, and light enough for two people to lift.
- Remove fridge and freezer doors. A standard council rule for child safety.
This matters most at the end of a tenancy, when the pressure to clear everything fast is high. If you are handing back keys, line the collection up with your notice to vacate dates and your end of lease clean, so nothing is left on the kerb after you have gone.
When council hard rubbish is not enough
The council service is great for a light, planned clean out. It struggles when you are on a deadline, over the size limit, or clearing a whole property. One free collection of 1 or 2 cubic metres does not cover a renovation or a full house.
When that happens you have three realistic options. A skip bin suits renovation debris and mixed loads the council will not take. A transfer station run suits a single car or trailer load you can move yourself. A licensed waste removal service suits a whole property clear out where you want someone else to carry it.
| Option | Best for | Who lifts it | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skip bin | Renovation debris and mixed loads the council refuses | You load it | Needs driveway or street space, and many councils require a permit if it sits on the road |
| Transfer station run | A single car or trailer load you can shift yourself | You load and drive | Gate fees apply and you need a vehicle that fits it |
| Licensed waste removal | A whole property clear out you want handled for you | They do | Costs more than the council service, and the good ones book out |
Skip and transfer station fees vary by council and operator. Check before you book.
North Removals is a removalist, not a waste service, so we will not pretend otherwise. Where we come in is when the clear out is happening because you are moving. We move what is coming with you, and we plan the job around your council collection date so the kerbside pile and the truck do not collide.
For a smaller load that can be a man with a van run, and when the date is tight a same day removal keeps it to one trip. It is worth knowing what a removalist costs in Melbourne before you book either.
Frequently asked questions about hard rubbish collection in Melbourne
Is hard rubbish collection free in Melbourne?
Yes, most councils include 1 to 5 free collections a year in your rates. Once you use your allowance, extra collections are usually paid, from about $83 to $216 depending on the council, and a few councils do not offer paid extras at all.
How do I find out when my hard rubbish collection is?
Most Melbourne councils now let you choose your own date rather than wait for a fixed day, so for 27 of the 31 metro councils the answer is whenever you book it. Use the lookup at the top of this page to find your council, then book online.
Do I need to book hard rubbish collection?
In most of Melbourne, yes. Of the 31 metro councils, 27 run a booked, at-call service where you request each collection. Only four still collect on set dates by area, where you simply present your items on the allocated week.
What is not accepted in hard rubbish?
General household rubbish, building and renovation waste, tyres, gas bottles, paint, chemicals and asbestos are refused everywhere. Green waste is usually excluded unless your council runs a separate branch service. Items over your size limit are also left behind.
How much hard rubbish can I put out?
Size limits run from 1 cubic metre (City of Melbourne and Banyule) to 5 cubic metres (Stonnington), with 2 to 3 the most common. Many councils also cap items at 1.5 metres long and a weight two people can lift.
Can I put my hard rubbish out early?
No. Put items out the evening before a booked collection, or by 6am on the Monday of a scheduled week. Piles left out early can be treated as illegal dumping, with fines starting around $200 in some councils.
What if I have more than the council will take?
Book a skip bin, take a load to your local transfer station, or hire a licensed waste removal service. North Removals is a removalist rather than a waste service, so if the clear out is part of a move we handle what is coming with you and work around your collection date.
Moving house around your hard rubbish collection?
Hard rubbish is the easy part when a mattress or a couch is all you have. The harder part is the move itself: the furniture that is coming with you, a tight settlement date, and getting it all out without a second trip.
That is the part we do. Get a fast, no obligation instant removalist quote and we will work around your council collection. Whether it is an apartment move or you just want affordable removalists who know these suburbs, we move Melbourne every day.
